Thunderer Squadron is a Quadra-Service unit, supporting students on the Defence Technical Undergraduate Scheme (DTUS) at the University of Southampton. All students intend to pursue a mainly technical career with either the Royal Navy, Army, RAF or MOD Civil Service. The Squadron is based at Capella House near Southampton city centre. The Squadron's facilities include Lecture and Presentation Rooms, Conference Room, Student Library, Student Internet Cafe, Mess Bar, Stores and Administration Area. The unit currently has 5 permanent military members of staff from all 3 Services and supports 138 students. The Squadron, formerly ‘Southampton University Royal Naval Support Unit’, was awarded the crest and name of Thunderer Squadron in August 1998 reflecting its engineering heritage. The name also provides the Squadron with a true identity that distinguishes it from the common misconception of it being a University Royal Naval Unit (URNU).
